Our Farm

Lila Story

I am Lilia. I have a loving husband and the two of us live a happy, contented, peaceful life in a small community in Punjab. We have everything any couple could need. My husband works hard on the farm while I stay home to manage the house. One day, a dear childhood friend, Maha, came to our village. She told me that she has taken some time off to teach Math in a nonprofit school called Education Without Boundaries. She said she has been feeling quite disillusioned with her life and needed to find something to that would make her feel like she is doing something good. She asked me to join her on her first day just to observe and see if volunteer teaching could be for me, too. When we arrived at the foundation, a small girl immediately approached me, looked up with the most expectant and grateful eyes, and asked, “Are you our new teacher?” I could not bear to see disappointment on that face and before I knew it, I said yes. She smiled from ear to ear and said, “Thank you, Teacher.”

I signed up to become a volunteer English teacher for Education Without Boundaries that same day. Maha was delighted. I met the students and listened to their stories and started with the first lesson. I loved every minute of it.

I’ve always been contented with the life I have; but for the first time in years, I felt really, really excited.
